Birthday Celebrations and a Black Friday Scare

Emma had a great birthday month with her celebrations with the family fairly spread out. At the Lavenders sharing the spotlight with cousin Tanner.

These art supplies should keep her busy for about a week or so.

Grandma made Emma a very cute quilt for her big bed.

More pinkalicious cupcakes.

And now for the tell of Emma's black Friday birthday. At two a.m. I (Laura) woke up with a horrible pain on my right side. I tried for two hours to get it to subside so I could go back to sleep by rotating ice and heat but nothing worked and it continued to get worse. By four a.m. I could not take it any longer and woke Quinn for a blessing after which he said to call the doctor. I called my OB not sure if this was preterm labor or not and he said to head up to McKay Dee Hospital and get check out in labor and delivery. A big thank you to Quinn's Mom who came right over to sit with the kids. It was a very long drive to Ogden that morning. We arrived a little after 5 a.m. and started the process of getting registered and checked out. It seemed to take for ever. The nurse hooked me up to the monitors to see if I was having contractions which it did not look like I was but it was a little hard to tell because I was in so much pain I could not sit still. The good news was that the baby's heart rate was good and she was very active (good for her but not for me, she only kicked me on the right side that morning for some reason).

Eventually after a through exam in which Quinn had to leave to get a breather did she rule out pre-term labor and suggested it might be a kidney stone. So they sent me down to the ER where I had to get checked in all over again. While waiting for a nurse and the doctor in our room I was in so much pain still that I either paced or sat straight up in a chair not moving with my eyes closed just trying to  breath through it. They tried to get me to lie down but it hurt too much. Eventually I got my IV and some morphine but it only helped for about 10 minutes before the pain got bad again. They sent me for an ultrasound where I had to try really really hard to lie still so she could perform it but the results ended up not showing anything. A second dose of morphine helped only slightly. By the time the doctor came back with all these results it was now around ten a.m. and I was finally starting to feel the pain subside. He said there wasn't anything they could really do because I was pregnant but I may have already passed the stone if I was feeling better. It also could have been a blockage or a kidney infection. So they just released me and sent me home with pain meds and antibiotics.  Some black Friday, the hospital didn't even offer us a discount on our copay or prescriptions.

Well after 8 hours of intense pain and only two hours of sleep we got home around noon to wish Emma a happy birthday. Quinn was kind enough to whisk the kids off to McDonald's for lunch and to play for a while so I could rest. When they got home we let Emma open her presents.

One tired Mom.

It was a princess birthday. Princess dolls, princess lip gloss, princess slippers, and a princess tea set.

Happy Birthday Emma! We love our 5 year old girl.

(It is now Tuesday and I am still feeling good. There has been no more intense pain thankgoodness. I am just back to regular pregnancy back aches. We are so greatful that it was not preterm labor and that Mia is still safe and well and growing inside me and not in the NICU.)
