Random Match-Up: Better Wizard

Who's the better wizard?

Dumbledore?

Or Gandalf?

(Since I'm anticipating at least one extra-nerdy reader to ask: Let's say for the sake of this match-up that we're talking about Gandalf the White.)

Hmmmm...I'd have to say Dumbledore. Although in full disclosure, I've never read the Lord of the Rings, I've only seen the movies. Does my vote still count?

There are two basic classes of thought:

1. Wizards should display a quiet confidence -- knowing that at any moment they could take care of business with one swish of their wand (or staff)

2. Wizards should use what gifts they've been given. What is it worth to have all those powers and then not use them?

Given those two genre of wizardom, my vote is reluctantly cast for Dumbledore. While he certainly is the more effeminate of the two, he never did resort to kicking butt by hitting people with his wand/staff. No, he'd conjour up a whirlwind, evil eating fire dragon, or whatnot. Also, he always had that subtle discipline to actually use his skills when time called for it.

Also, Dumbledore never ran away from a fight.

This is Tom's opinion...I am not studied up enough on the subject. While Dumbledor is a wizard Gandalf is in fact an angelic being, not a mere mortal like Dumbledor is. Gandalf would obviously take Dumbledor hands down anyday. Just like he took down the Great Goblin, tricked the trolls and chased Sauron out of Dol Guldor (sp), ior much less like he motivated the people of Middle Earth to defeat the powers of Sauron (something that is hinted that he could have done himself but was not his calling but rather that of the people of Middle Earth). I know I'm a nerd.

I vote for Dumbledore. I agree with the use of magic over hitting people with your staff. Dumbledore actually used his magic and knowledge to help Harry. Gandalf just let Frodo go out on his own.
Gandalf didn't even use his magic to kill the Shadow beast, he used a sword. Dumbledore would have taken him out like he was nothin!

Gandolf rides horses and fights demons, orcs, trolls, kicking butt with both a staff and a sword. Dumbledore just stares knowingly over his glasses, occassionally whipping out his wand to make sofas, and leaves all the hard work to a few pre-teens. Gandolf all the way.

Dumbledore only won some of his battles because he had the Elder Wand. Gandolf earned "White" status. Gandolf had to do all he did inspite of Merry and Pippin. Gandolf used Glamdring the Foe Hammer. Gandolf had to contend in a world with two evil wizards. The original dark cloaked beings were wraiths not dementors. Gandolf is an eternal being, who still got a whooping once in a while and kept at it. He did not have someone kill him when he was sick from drinking Voldemort juice, and fade out. Moria is much scarier than seaside resort cave. Besides most cool ideas in HP were already laid in LOR. Long live King Aragon.
PS- Shelob would waste Aragog.

For the Gandalf option--are we talking animated or real-life?

IN all fairness and geekiness...they use different energy for their magic as Gandolf the white is the most powerful being as he is basically an angel and therefore his magic is more a unearthly control of things and died fighting a DEMON and came back to life pure. Dumbledore is a wizard of magics, the greatest wizard ever, but of the world, he died and did not return, also great and can conjure things Gandolf cannot.

But...that being said...they would never fight each other.

Becky -- Way to not answer the question.

Sarah -- I'm not sure how to answer your question. You know Gandalf isn't *real*, right? But, for the sake of this comparison, just follow your heart and use whatever iteration of Gandalf you like best.

Totally Dumbeldore because he had the unbeatable wand. Dumbledore was such a great wizrad that his enemy was afaid of him (Voldermort) whereas Gandalf's enemy (Sauron) was not afaid of hiim at all.

Is this even a discussion? Puh-leaze, people. Dumbledore is a wizard in the same way that those robots at Chuck E. Cheese are a "band."

Quinn and/or Lauralee said...

Garrett, you might say that they are better than a band. Because they are robots.
