Week 19 - Black Hills Trip - Days 1-2

Saturday July 18th we headed out across Wyoming to the South Dakota and the Black Hills. Quinn had a couple of letter boxes to do along the way and at some of our stops. Our first big stop was at Fort Bridger. It was a trading post for trappers, a pony express stop, Mormon Fort, and a military fort.
The actual trading post fort was just a replica but some of the buildings were original to the other times.

Stop #2 was at Little America in the middle of nowhere for lunch and 75 cent ice cream cones. Quinn also did some letter boxes.

I spy James not just Emma.

We stopped in Casper for the night and the kids were very excited to go swimming but with Covid they only allow 2 families in the pool at a time and the hotel was booked due to a baseball tournament. So we had to settle for tv and reading instead. The next morning we got up and drove about 3 hours to Devils Tower National Monument. The kids started their Junior Ranger packets in the car and finished as we walked around the tower. It was a little crowded so we had lunch in the van and we learned that it was too hot to hike in masks.

Keeping busy in the car.

Our first sighting

Waiting in line to get in.

Mountain lions peeking out the window.

Lunch in the car.

Someone volunteered to take our picture but cut off the top and we realized oops now we need a Lysol wipe for the phone.

The view of the valley opposite of the tower.

Climbing

Native American legend is the marks were made by a bear trying to climb up.

Working on his packet.

Native Americans tie ribbons on branches as prayers. The area around the tower is sacred to them.

Next to the tower is a field full of prairie dogs. They were cute and make a chirping noise that is pretty loud.

Last stop of the day was Wall, South Dakota and the Wall Drug shopping center. Think West Yellowstone. The kids spent some of their saved up allowance here. We shopped, took tons of pictures at all the attractions (touching everything and then sanitizing) and had a yummy dinner. They even let us order ice cream even though they had just closed and were cleaning up.

Mia bought this cute hat with her money.

James bought himself a coon skin hat.

Back at the hotel to watch a quick show before bed.
