Week 13 - Not Sequoia National Park But Bear Lake

Sunday June 7th we again had home church with Grandma Lavender. Emma's lesson focused on these principles and James made dirt cups for dessert from the friend magazine. They were delicious! We ended the day with game night. I believe Quinn won - he usually does when we play Splendor.

I think Big Red the Dog is doing James' school work.

Well this was the week we were supposed to be in California with almost all the Van Bibbers visiting Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park. But California is still closed and the parks are not open. Carly is now not able to travel due to the twins. Anne and Brock did not plan to come on this trip because they thought they'd have a 6 month old but planned a camping trip for themselves and one of Brock's brothers to take some time away and distract themselves. The rest of us having no where else to go headed to Bear Lake. Hannah and Harvey stayed home to get all the things done she had been putting off or that got canceled.

Wednesday June 10th we packed up and headed out. Quinn planned a few stops for us in Cache Valley on the way. The first stop was Paradise Cemetery (no pictures) to look for a letterbox but we failed. It is a very pretty area though and a cute small town. We then grabbed lunch from Subway and headed to letterbox #2. It was at a park with a playground and a canal. The kids had fun exploring and getting to play for a few minutes on the play equipment before the parks service came and sprayed them with bleach. It was their first time playing at a park since before last winter. Box #2 was also a fail.

Box #3 was at the Logan Cemetery and we found it! The kids also found some very cool lion headstones. We then headed up the canyon and the kids of course tried to be the first one to spot the lake just like I would with my family growing up. We arrived right after Grandma and Grandpa Bibber and Daniel and Lyla. Taylor and Mckenna arrived a few hours later the kids had a blast constantly throwing the ball for the dogs.

Found the spot but it was gone.

Kids were so excited the swing is finally up.

Quinn logging his one letterbox find.

Playing Splendor with Grandma.

Thursday the men did MORE DIGGING. Poor guys. But then they went golfing (all but Quinn). The rest of us walked about 1.5 miles to town and bought burgers, fries and shakes. Then the walk back and feeding the fish at the marina. We noticed on the walk that Mia was a bit subdued and didn't eat hardly anything. When we got back to camp and took her temperature it was 103.8 and her tonsil were swollen again. Good thing we had Dr. Van Bibber with us. Daniel said it looked like strep and probably was since she had just had it. He called in a prescription and now that Garden City has a clinic and pharmacy we were able to start her on antibiotics that day. We are going to have to watch this girl. You would know she was sick unless you really pay attention. She never says anything. That afternoon the men did some more digging. After dinner Daniel took Emma, James and I on a ride in his side-by-side. WOW! It was a short ride just up the hill but he goes fast and does not go on the road. Just right through all the brush. It was fun but I don't think I could ever feel comfortable driving like that.
Daniel makes good breakfasts.

These girls love being together.

Love the view from our tent window.

Walking with the dogs to get lunch.

Merlin's Dive In - shorter lines, same food, and a playground.

The view of our hill from the Marina. Our spot is behind the far trees on the right.

Playing with the dogs and on the swing. No broken bones this time!

More digging - almost done.

Cousins

Friday was beach day after the men filled in the holes with sand. No more digging. It's done and the water is good to go for our property. Still an issue somewhere else though.

Bear Lake is perfect for kite flying.

Saturday Daniel and Lyla had to head home. Just after breakfast the wind picked up and stayed for most of the day. After Daniel left the rest of us minus Grandpa because of his sore back and legs went on a hike up St. Charles campground to escape the wind and it worked. The dogs loved it. The kids complained until we started playing Harry Potter Guess Who and got out the snacks. We had laid both our tents down before leaving but when we went to put it back up we ripped a hole in the rain fly. Guess we'll be tent shopping soon. We had fun playing code names and sitting around the fire again. And these dogs never seem to tire out.

Sunday after getting packed up we had our church lesson. Emma had prepared part of it and taught about friendship. She gave each of us a piece to a puzzle with ways we can show friendship and kindness to others and then had us put it together. It was nice to have more people join in our discussion and to be able to drink a diet coke at the same time. Before leaving we got out Quinn's BB Gun and taught Emma and James how to shoot for the first time. We made a target after everyone had practiced and had a competition to see who could get the closest. I believe I won. Take that kids and Dad. Mom has skills.

And they are finally catching up from all their late nights.
